Tween to Teen: Giving kids space to express themselves
It goes without saying that for all parents, watching our kids grow up is incredibly rewarding. But it all happens so fast! It seems like yesterday mine were crawling around at my feet!!
The tween to teen transformation stage
We've all been through this stage in life - it wasn't that long ago, after all! I'm sure you can remember that feeling of wanting your own independence, wishing your parents would give you some space to become your own person.
The older kids get, the more important it is for them to feel they can make some decisions on their own
If there's one fundamental truth about growing up it's this - the older kids get, the more important it is for them to feel they can make some decisions on their own and be given permission to choose. Their bedroom is an ideal environment to provide this freedom, as it gives them a space to personalise.
Creating choices
Of course, creative freedom doesn't mean you can't have a hand in helping design their room, but this does require a certain degree of subtlety. Good parenting is allowing kids to make their own decisions, but giving them the tools to make sensible decisions is great parenting.
Moving from Tween to Teen is an exciting stage in life. Toys and stuffed animals can often get traded in for more grown-up pieces of decor. If you can, stay involved in the process and give them a little inspiration on how they might personalise their space. Focus on their interests, what are their hobbies? Sporting equipment, musical instruments, wall art, personalising with photos of friends can be incorporated easily to create a stylish and fun.
Naturally, you will also need to equip them with the basics. A comfortable work space to study and organise their 'important' affairs is a must in every room. Incorporating a stylish bedhead and even an arm chair for socialising with friends also adds a grown-up vibe and of course, we can help personalise these to complement the other styled elements they've chosen for their room.
Everything down to the bedhead fabric and pattern can be detailed to your child's specific liking. So share our kids section with your tween/ teen and get started on designing their dream bedroom.
We think projects like these are a wonderful way to bring you and the kids closer together…have fun!
