Loves & Inspiration

  1. Re-purpose, Re-use, Recycle

    Re-purpose, Re-use, Recycle

Does living a sustainable life mean having to sacrifice style?

We live in world of ‘single use’ consumerism. We hear phrases like ‘global warming’, ‘climate change’ and ‘inequality’ in the news and media almost daily. But sometimes it’s hard for us to see how we can make a positive change in our own homes. So, for the most part we do what we can, put our recycling bins out every week and hope for the best.

Purchasing ethically doesn’t have to mean trawling the internet for hours looking for high end sustainable brands but purchasing with a conscience, buying once and buying well. Seeking out quality products designed to last over the longer term.

We recently attended the Décor + Design 17 exhibition in Melbourne and were excited to see that the design industry is putting more thought and effort into our impact on the natural world. Industry experts are promoting organic materials

  2. Tween to Teen: Giving kids space to express themselves

Tween to Teen: Giving kids space to express themselves

It goes without saying that for all parents, watching our kids grow up is incredibly rewarding. But it all happens so fast! It seems like yesterday mine were crawling around at my feet!!

The tween to teen transformation stage

We've all been through this stage in life - it wasn't that long ago, after all! I'm sure you can remember that feeling of wanting your own independence, wishing your parents would give you some space to become your own person.

The older kids get, the more important it is for them to feel they can make some decisions on their own

If there's one fundamental truth about growing up it's this - the older kids get, the more important it is for

  3. It's a Dog's Life...

It's one of the most divisive topics and has tested many a solid relationship.

The big question - should dogs be allowed inside the house, let alone inside the bedroom??

There's a continually moving line in this debate that generally gets pushed in one direction or the other by various members of the household, including the dog !!

I mean really, who could resist these puppy dog eyes...??

    Image from justdogbreeds.com

In my case it started a few years ago with the purchase of our first family Dog, to which my husband was totally unaware.

Somehow the kids and I convinced the love of my life, that this beautiful ball of energy couldn't sleep outside in the cold; and that's when the line was drawn. Our new four legged friend was granted one

  4. Rainy Days & Entryways

    There's a lot I love about winter.

Boots, jackets, cosy nights in with red wine and an open fire. Cold rainy days...not so much.

However, being the eternal optimist and lover of colour and design, I have to say this cloud does have a silver lining.

For centuries the humble umbrella has been used as an elegant fashion accessory and today the quality and range of exquisite brollies is almost endless. From classic polka dots, elegant stripes and traditional tartan, to floral prints. I have to confess...I have a thing for designer umbrellas!!

Please indulge me, take a breath and enjoy some serious arm candy...

  5. Mosaic Inspiration - A treasure found

What are the chances....a London based luxury rug designer doing renovations on his property in the English countryside stumbles across a Roman mosaic that has laid patiently, unseen for over 1,500 years.

Luke Irwin has specialised in the design and manufacture of hand-knotted custom made rugs since 2003. His collection of traditionally crafted rugs can be found in his showroom in London's Pimlico Road Design District.

But it's the inspiration behind his latest Mosaic Collection that has captured the imagination of lovers of interiors and historians alike.

Interesting read (watch the video) if you're into history or you just love floor rugs :) ....

"A good rug can be the cornerstone or foundation on which all the disparate elements and personality

  6. Golden Age of Hollywood

An Academy Award inspired post that takes us back to the golden age of Hollywood, the all American Dream and mid century modern architecture.

Photographer Stephanie Kloss provides a glimpse into the social elite of yesteryear with her latest series, California Dreaming for Lumas.

Expansive modern houses with functional designs, luscious green spaces and turquoise pools are symbols of the time and you may feel a familiarity with these images or at least recognise some of them. Kloss's subjects have provided the backdrop for films like The Big Labowski, Charlie's Angels and the TV Series Mad Men.

  7. Artwork in the Bedroom

Artwork is highly personal, particularly in the bedroom where our individualistic tastes are free to soar. After all, it’s the one room that doesn’t have to please the masses and nothing says 'grown up' more than artwork in the bedroom.

    Make a Statement!

Artwork can make a statement in the bedroom, intensifying mood and drama, while still blending with the other elements of the room. You can create this effect by choosing art that adds layers to the existing colours in your bedroom, and/or continuity of pattern and texture.

When it comes to making a statement, this breath taking feathered collage from Mondocherry creates a subtle, calm mood with powerful visual effect. Mondocherry is a collaboration of original artworks and designs by sisters Clare and Joy. Their work first caught our eye earlier this year in a blog post on decor8.

  8. Cosy Retreats

As we fast approach the middle of the year, you’ve no doubt felt the mercury drop and found yourself reaching for those old favourites that have been neglected since last winter…or you’ve rightfully decided to surround yourself with a few new ‘must haves’.

Whether it’s clothing (I love winter for jackets and boots), winter bedding, a hot water bottle or the wood fire heater, winter is a time for snuggling and sometimes retreating to those special places that warm the heart.

Creating a space you can claim as your own is something we all need, to restore some balance and recharge the batteries. Finding the time is never a simple task, but finding the space can be easier than we think.

When you take a good look around your home, quite space sits patiently in every corner. It's waiting for you as soon as you wake up in the morning, you walk past it on the way to the kitchen, you

  9. Going dark (in the kitchen)

We all know white kitchens are timeless. White cabinetry is a beautiful look that can be contemporary, classic, traditional and even works in a totally eclectic home. Recently, though, I just keep finding myself drawn to darker tones - charcoal (or even black) has always been around, it's nothing amazingly new, it's just having another "moment" of popularity right now...... and I have to say, I'm loving it!

Contrasting with crisp white in a clean, minimal space -

Amazing with copper accents too -

    Slightly more classic here -

  10. Dream Kitchen

So what’s your dream kitchen?  We are in the process of renovating ours so there’s been plenty of “kitchen talk” and bookmarking images for inspiration and ideas.  I spend pretty much (what feels like...) most of my life in the kitchen so I’ve got to get it right - right?

I’m not really sure what my “dream kitchen” is actually…I seem to change my mind quite frequently!  I do love vintage with an industrial edge although sometimes I look at images of Scandi “all white” kitchens or kitchens that are rustic with concrete flooring and I think mmmm maybe this is “the one”… see my dilemma?  With all this kitchen banter going on at HQ we’ve decided to put together our own list – all dreamy, all gorgeous (and all will probably send your heart beating with envy)!

Oh those floors…this is the Paris apartment of architect Joseph
