  1. Re-purpose, Re-use, Recycle

    Re-purpose, Re-use, Recycle

Does living a sustainable life mean having to sacrifice style?

We live in world of ‘single use’ consumerism. We hear phrases like ‘global warming’, ‘climate change’ and ‘inequality’ in the news and media almost daily. But sometimes it’s hard for us to see how we can make a positive change in our own homes. So, for the most part we do what we can, put our recycling bins out every week and hope for the best.

Purchasing ethically doesn’t have to mean trawling the internet for hours looking for high end sustainable brands but purchasing with a conscience, buying once and buying well. Seeking out quality products designed to last over the longer term.

We recently attended the Décor + Design 17 exhibition in Melbourne and were excited to see that the design industry is putting more thought and effort into our impact on the natural world. Industry experts are promoting organic materials

  2. Declutter your home and make way for the summer

Declutter your home and make way for the summer

Summer! It's a season where you want to leave your windows wide open and let the fresh air circulate around your home, sheer curtains fluttering in the wind. Good friends can drop by unannounced to share their latest news and a cheeky wine or G&T. Of course, you proudly usher them through your beautiful home to the kitchen, living area or back deck that's perfectly set up for informal entertaining. Isn't that the dream?

The reality for many of us is that getting our house presentable takes massive effort, and keeping it that way, let's just say that can be easier said than done. As the silly season is upon us, we thought we'd share some tips on decluttering, storage and changing basic styling to help get your home ready for summer social scenes.

  3. The Warmth of Winter

All around us colours are changing.

Each year the fresh, cool, lighter colours of summer slowly deepen and transform into the warmer earthier tones of autumn. As winter sets in and the mercury continues to drop, the mood changes again and so do our preferences for textures and fabrics.

It's amazing to see how much the change in season affects our choices, our emotions and even our purchases!

Over the last little while we've enjoyed working with the shift from pale linens and whites to deeper colour tones, lots of velvet and some gorgeous textures and patterns.

There's no doubt that creating something cosier and warmer in our bedrooms feels right at this time of year, that doesn't have to mean dark colours of course, or even a whole new bedhead - just adding some new cushions, a blanket and maybe a rug can

  4. Enchanted by Green

    Leaves, leaves, glorious leaves!

At BedNest we’re loving the continued trend towards greening up our interiors. From luminescent lime to calming pastel greens, indoor plants are making our homes feel oh so comfortable and liveable.

Perhaps our love for indoor botanicals is born out of nostalgia for a time when life was simpler, less hurried and hectic; when summer days lingered long and warm evenings seemed to last forever.

This image from queenslandhomes.com.au is so reminiscent of long summer days and relaxed tropical living

  5. Marle heaven

Long time fans of the fabulous range from rug "celebrities" Armadillo&Co, we are literally bursting to share with you the latest collection from our "go to" favourite for anything rug.

The Marle collection has just been released as part of the Armadillo&Co Bespoke collection, which means the rugs can be customised to suit any colour scheme or size. It revolves around 3 bold designs - Fold, Tuck and Pleat -  using colour blocking. Beautiful Argentinian wool in the usual stunning Armadillo&Co colours creates the marled look by combining each colour with a natural yarn - the result is soft, tonal heaven!

So here are the three designs:

  6. Black tapware & marble

A very exciting project we are working on for a very lovely BedNest couple has had us researching bathrooms recently and more specifically marble in bathrooms. Not a bad way to spend time hey?!

Black tapware has been around for a little while now but is certainly growing in popularity and is widely available. We've loved it from the outset but have yet to actually use it in a project as I feel it takes a certain style of bathroom to really set it off.

Black tapware + marble + contemporary style - oh yes, this is the project! Here are some inspiration shots to show you what we're thinking......

I know, I know - these are clearly subway tiles and there isn't much marble but the feel is divine and can you imagine this with some plain white tiles and marble too? -

This time I just need you to imagine a marble splashback replacing the

  7. A different kind of Christmas tree

I’ve got a very talented friend who is very clever at making things (I hope you are reading this Ali...).  She once created a Christmas tree out of pieces of wood that could be hung from the ceiling (her first baby was crawling at the time and, with first time mother nerves, she was terrified that a normal tree would topple onto her).  Let’s just say that we were thoroughly impressed!

For most of us, the tree is the centre of all things Christmas-y in our home but sometimes a traditional tree just isn’t what you want.  Lack of space, no time/unable to lug back a tree or maybe you just want to get creative and make your own (or have a crawling baby...).  We thought we’d share some of the fun ideas that we’ve spotted - stylish and playful (plus no messy needles!), they show a different take on a favourite tradition.

  8. Hello Summer

Although summer hasn’t officially started yet, judging by the temperatures over the past week I think we can safely say that summer has arrived.  Although (unlike Nicky) I’m not a huge fan of the heat (unless of course I’m lazing by the pool with a cocktail and a seriously good read) I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming summer break.

Today at HQ we thought we’d indulge in a bit of summer love and share our coveted finds for the season.  Bright, beachy, fresh and fun, they all shout “summer” to us and can’t help but put you in a holiday mood.  Some possible ideas for Christmas gifts too – yup, only four and a bit weeks away…please tell me how that happened??!!

  9. Learning to sew...

First up - my apologies to any non-Sydneysiders, this post is not only Sydney focussed, even worse it's Eastern beaches of Sydney focussed. Totally localised and for that I do apologise. There is, however, reason to keep reading for everyone - the gorgeous images my spark an idea and get you to seek somewhere similar and local to you....

We're a little off the usual path for our Blog post this week but with good reason. Sometimes we just come across things that just have to be shared - recipes, holiday houses, cafes, products. Well today, it's a fabulous boutique sewing business here in Sydney's Bronte. This is BY NO MEANS a sponsored post - just a little gem of loveliness that you need in your life!

Welcome, my friends, to The Bronte Sewing Room.

This fabulous business is the genius of Colette, an incredible

  10. Not your usual bedside table...

Don’t you just love those “think outside the box” kind of ideas when it comes to interiors and your home?  We do.  It’s great to escape the obvious sometimes which is why (being lovers of anything bedroomy…) we always enjoy spotting unconventional ideas for bedside tables.

What is a bedside table anyway?  It’s really just a place to put things that you may want during the night or when you get up (lamp, book, phone)…oh, and of course you want it to look great too.  It doesn’t have to be a table though - chairs, stools, crates, baskets, drums, ladders or even a pile of books will do.  Besides, upcycling and repurposing is a great way to pack some personality into your space.  Here’s a few ideas that are sure to inspire you!

We love the ladder idea...a space saver, practical and looks amazing -
