I’ve always considered myself a bit of a plain and simple kind of girl but lately I’ve really fallen in love with pattern – and what a time to fall in love!  There are gorgeous patterns everywhere - ikat, chevron, trellis, stripe, damask, floral, toil, animal print, polka dot, graphic.  Bright and colourful or soft and subdued.  Riding solo or mixed up craziness.  Rules are being broken and caution thrown into the wind – a pattern play is going on that is pure perfection!  Oh my…

Mixing patterns definitely brings a sense of playfulness to a space.  Busy patterns up energy levels while simple or pale patterns can create serenity.  The art of pattern mixing can be a bit daunting (I hear you!) but hopefully the below pics will give you some inspiration - don't forget you can always abandon the “rules” and just have some fun.  You’d be surprised just how far you can push the boundaries and still create a look you love.

Yellow and grey is a great colour combination - the mix of small scale and bold patterns in a similar colour palette makes this work -

The pink sofa provides a solid backdrop of uniform colour which lets the cushions in contrasting patterns sit comfortably together -

This room works because the styles of patterns are similar -

Sticking with one colour palette is an easy way to create harmony with various patterns -

And here -

Sometimes you just have to break all the rules – don’t be afraid to bring different colours, textures and finishes into your space as seen here (removable wall stickers by Curio & Curio) -

Jonathan Adler always gets it right doesn’t he – there’s loads going on but the varying patterns work together -

And in this lounge -

This is our "Florence" bedhead upholstered in a divine Florence Broadhurst lead cloth from Signature Prints (featured in Home Beautiful) – the floral works beautifully with the coordinate stripe and plain cushions in fuchsia (bedlinen by Cultiver) -

With so many gorgeous prints in fabrics and wallpapers out at the moment it’s a great time to go a little crazy about pattern.

Oh my…
